Move Your World: Youth Symposium 2014

ACIC’s 2014 Youth Conference (Move Your World) was a great success, with many interesting issues and skills-based workshop and activities planned by an all-star facilitation team made up of volunteers and ACIC staff. Youth had the opportunity to learn about International Humanitarian Law, Active Global Citizenship, Ethical volunteerism and much more. Through simulation activities, experiential learning was a key theme over the weekend. One highlight of the conference was “The Blanket Exercise” activity, which was facilitated by an external group of elders and focused on Canada’s colonial history and the interaction between the indigenous peoples and the settler cultures. This proved to be one of the most powerful exercises of the conference. The youth participants have now returned home, where they will continue to blossom as young leaders within their communities.

Move Your World: Youth Symposium 2013

ACIC and the Canadian Red Cross hosted the 8th annual Move Your World Youth Symposium from October 11th-14th. These 54 Atlantic Canadian youth, ages 15-18, joined together at Camp Brigadoon to learn about global issues and develop skills through this interactive, exciting educational experience. The conference included a number of experiential learning activities that highlighted global and social justice issues important to ACIC and its members. A four-hour refugee simulation was cited as the most impactful part of the conference for many participants (and volunteers!) This activity enabled the youth to better understand the experience of refugees and internally-displaced persons around the world. ACIC member organizations and youth volunteers presented skills and issue-based workshops, which provided participants with new ideas and highlighted ways in which youth can make difference. This year we worked with an incredible Volunteer Team comprised of young Atlantic Canadians, many of whom had previously been youth participants at the conference. Overall, the conference was an overwhelming success. A big thank you to our Volunteer Team and to the Coordination Team – Kristie and Jennifer of Canadian Red Cross, and Stephanie and Lee-Anne of ACIC

Move Your World: Youth Symposium 2012

ACIC and the Canadian Red Cross hosted the 7th annual Move Your World Youth Symposium this past fall. From October 5-8 th, we engaged almost 60 Atlantic Canadians aged 15-18 at camp Brigadoon in Nova Scotia. These youth came together to learn about global issues and develop skills in an interactive, exciting educational experience. The conference included a number of experiential learning activities that engaged the youth and highlighted issues that are important to ACIC and its members. A four hour refugee simulation was cited as the most impactful part of the conference for many participants (and volunteers!), which enabled the youth to better understand the experience of refugees and internally displaced persons throughout the world. Other ACIC member organizations assisted by presenting skills and issue-based workshops, which presented the youth participants with new ideas and challenges and showed ways in which youth can make a difference. This year as in past, we worked with an incredible volunteer team comprised of young Atlantic Canadians, many of whom participated in the conference as high school students. Overall, the conference was an overwhelming success. A big thank you to our volunteers and to staff member Carolyn Whiteway for filling some very big shoes of past coordinator, Rena Kulczycki. Despite the fact that this was Carolyn’s first encounter with the conference, she did a brilliant job of bringing it all together!

Move Your World: Youth Symposium 2011

The annual Move Your World Youth Symposium is a four day eye opening event for Atlantic Canadians aged 15-18. The conference brings together a diverse group of youth in a rural setting to learn about global issues and develop skills in an interactive, exciting educational experience. The 2011 conference was fun and exciting for all - check out our program agenda here! Move Your World is an inclusive event that promotes social justice. We seek to address and challenge sexism, racism, homophobia, and transphobia in our communities and at this event. Move Your World does not permit recreational alcohol or drug use at our Symposium. The MOVE YOUR WORLD, 6th Annual Global Issues Youth Symposium, was held on Oct 20-23, 2011, at the Camp Mockingee, in Upper Vaughan, Nova Scotia, just outside of Windsor. There was NO REGISTRATION FEE to participate in this event, and travel bursaries were available to ensure accessibility for youth across the Atlantic region. Presented by the Atlantic Council for International Cooperation and the Canadian Red Cross, the 6th annual Move Your World featured Yannick Tona as the keynote speaker, while he was on his Ripples of Change cross Canada tour. Yannick inspired participants to believe in their ability to make a difference in their community and in the world, through combating prejudice and racism. Each year, a wonderful team of volunteers helps us host this dynamic youth conference. MYW volunteers are given the opportunity to help plan, facilitate and evaluate the 2011 Symposium. The Move Your World Symposium coordinators and the planning committee give direction and provide support to the volunteers selected to fill these roles. The entire youth symposium would not be possible without the dedicated volunteers and employees involved.
